Green transformation
WHAT DOES IT MEAN?
Climate neutrality by 2040
Net zero target, based on the standard of the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) with a 1.5 C-compliant reduction pathway. This means at least 90% reduction in Scope 1 to 3 emissions compared to 2019. Accordingly, we want to neutralize the residual emissions of up to a maximum of 10% that are difficult or otherwise unavoidable.

Scope 3 – Interim targets
Target year | SCOPE 3 CATEGORY | TARGET |
---|---|---|
2029 | 3.1 Purchased goods and services 3.2 Capital goods | 66% of suppliers (according to emissions volume) of purchased goods and services and capital goods have science-based emissions targets. |
2034 | 3.3 Fuels and energy-related activities | –40% of CO₂e emissions from energy and fuel-related activities compared to 2019. |
2034 | 3.11 Use of sold products | –63% of CO₂e emissions from use and utilization of fossil fuels sold compared to 2019. |
Alongside the targets for Scope 1 and 2 emissions, interim targets have also been defined for material Scope 3 categories as part of DB Groupʼs climate targets. Scope 3.1/3.2 emissions are currently calculated on the basis of financial flows using average emissions values for the relevant sectors. A comprehensive collection and calculation of Scope 3.1/3.2 emissions using primary data is currently being developed. The material absolute Scope 3 emissions are shown in Greenhouse gas emissions and footprint.
WHAT ARE THE MAIN LEVERS?
- Increase in the share of renewable energies
- Diesel phase-out
- Implementing the heat transition
- Increasing energy efficiency
WHAT ARE OUR MILESTONES?
- 100% renewable energies from 2025 for all our depots, office buildings and stations in Germany supplied by DB Energy
- 80% renewable energies in the DB traction current mix by 2030
- 100% renewable energies in the DB traction current mix by 2038

WHAT DOES IT MEAN?
Circular economy by 2040
For us, circular economy means using raw materials sparingly, keeping them in the value-added chain for as long as possible and – where technically and legally possible – recycling our waste to reduce the need for primary raw materials and the volume of waste. This means that only technically necessary primary raw materials are used as input and all waste is sent for recycling as output, provided this is legally and technically possible.
WHAT ARE OUR MILESTONES?
- Output recycling rate ≥95%
- Recycling share of rail steel 45% by 2030
- Recycling share of track ballast 40% by 2030
- Recycling share of concrete ties 30% by 2030
WHAT ARE THE MAIN LEVERS?
- Sustainable and resource-efficient procurement
- (Re-)processing of resources
- Optimization of waste management
- Establishment and expansion of strategic partnerships with suppliers

WHAT DOES IT MEAN?
By 2050, we will have alleviated rail traffic noise for all residents living near existing lines affected by it.
WHAT ARE THE MAIN LEVERS?
- Continuation of the Federal Government’s voluntary noise remediation program (since 1999).
- Noise remediation measures on the infrastructure, such as the installation of noise barriers on lines or soundproof windows on residential buildings.
- Noise remediation measures on vehicles, such as equipping main line locomotives with quiet brake systems.
- Noise protection projects with partners in the field of research and development.
WHAT ARE THE MAIN LEVERS?
- Alleviation for 3,250 km existing lines and about 800,000 residents by 2030.
