DB Energy is responsible for supplying energy to train operating companies (TOCs). To this end, DB Energy has a robust energy infrastructure in place to supply electricity and fuel to both mobile and stationary consumers.
In this way, DB Energy is making a significant contribution to a reliable and cost-effective rail system. By implementing DB Group’s climate protection targets, DB Energy is a key driver of climate-friendly energy supply for rail transport in Germany. To achieve the Group’s target of carbon neutrality by 2040, DB Group’s traction current provision is to be fully converted to renewable energies by 2038. For non-electrified lines, the infrastructure for battery-powered trains or for the supply of hydrogen and biofuels is to be provided. Since the beginning of 2025, all stations, maintenance depots, office buildings and facilities in Germany supplied by DB Energy have been powered by 100 % eco-power.
One key contribution DB Energy makes to the reliability of the rail system is ensuring a consistently high level of supply reliability. At the same time, DB Energy supports the competitiveness of rail transport through efficient grid operation and balanced energy procurement.
DB Energy plans to implement organizational measures to improve the efficiency of its operational processes and clarify responsibilities in order to prepare for the increasing workload amid limited resources. To ensure long-term profitability, the procurement portfolio is being continuously expanded and services for stationary energy solutions are being further developed.
The energy transition requires adjustments to the traction current supply infrastructure. Key expansion and renovation needs for technical facilities are addressed through a long-term grid strategy that is continuously refined and implemented accordingly. Our power plant strategy for phasing out the electricity currently still sourced in part from fossil fuel power plants takes into account developments in the economic and regulatory environment and is reviewed on an ongoing basis.
DB Energy continues to implement the measures necessary to achieve the climate protection targets. In addition, DB Energy’s facilities are being reviewed to ensure their climate resilience.
