Targets (S3-5)
Reducing the impacts of rail traffic noise on local residents is an essential prerequisite for a shift in the mode of transport towards rail. We are therefore continuing to work with the Federal Government on implementing our noise reduction targets.
- By the end of 2030, we intend to relieve rail traffic noise for half of all affected local residents living near or exposed to noise from existing lines.
- By 2025, we aim to have relieved all of the about 1.6 million affected local residents.
A prerequisite for achieving these targets is the adequate provision of funds for local noise remediation measures by the Federal Government in the noise reduction item of the Federal budget.
The basis for the number of local residents affected is the assumptions from the Federal Government’s “Harmonization of the noise remediation program with noise action planning” project, which was completed in 2021. As part of this project, the targets for reducing the number of people affected were agreed with the participation of citizens’ action groups, associations and authorities, among others. The 2019 overall concept for noise remediation forms the basis for the routes exposed to noise.
We have agreed the 2030 noise reduction target with the Federal Government. The Federal Government also represents the affected communities as representative and interest group.
Based on the progress made in implementing the noise remediation program, the overall noise remediation concept and the Noise Remediation Funding Directive are regularly revised (at least every five years) and further developed by the Federal Government. Our noise reduction target is for 2050.
