Share of renewable energies in the DB traction current mix

Share of renewable energies in the DB traction current mix
Share_of_renewable_energies

To achieve our climate protection target, we are constantly increasing the share of renewable energies in the DB traction current mix.

  • By 2038 at the latest, we want to operate electrified DB rail transport in Germany entirely with electricity from renewable energies.
  • By 2030, the aim is for renewable energies to account for 80 % of the DB traction current mix in Germany.

There is no legal requirement to set an eco-power target. Among other things, our 100 % renewable energies target is consistent with the timeframe of the German Coal Phase-out Act of August 8, 2020, which stipulates that no more electricity will be generated from hard coal and lignite in Germany by the end of the 2038 calendar year at the latest.

DB traction current is DB Group’s largest source of Scope 1 and 2 emissions. The targeted reduction in overall emissions cannot be achieved without an increase in the share of renewable energies in the traction current mix.

The implementation of the lever to increase the share of eco-power in the DB traction current mix to 100 % and the development of our market-based Scope 2 emissions form part of our Group-wide planning and are monitored on an ongoing basis. The monitoring of target achievement focuses on the percentage share of renewable energies in the DB traction current mix in Germany.

There is no reference value under the relative target system, so the base year does not apply in this case. The target has been aligned with non-Group scientific methods and standards.
