Development of business units

Environmental measures

  • Since September 2025, about 13,000 DB Regional multiple unit drivers have been able to call up an automated recommendation for the most energy-efficient parking of their vehicle at the end of their shift via the STG Light app. This lowers both energy consumption and costs, reduces noise for residents and cuts greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Alternative drives:
    • In 2024, DB Regional, in conjunction with the manufacturer Stadler, the state of Rhineland-Palatinate and the special-purpose association Zweckverband ÖPNV Rheinland-Pfalz Süd, presented new battery trains of the FLIRT battery type for use on non-electrified or partially electrified lines. Between the start of 2026 and 2029, a total of 44 units will largely replace the diesel multiple units currently in use. An implementation and financing agreement was signed with the project partners in June 2025.
    • In June 2025, DB Regional signed the transport contract for the Central Thuringia Battery Network. This will be operated with 19 battery-powered FLIRT
battery trains starting from December 2028. As a result, the diesel trains previously used on 13 % of the Thuringian rail network will be replaced by electrically powered trains.
    • DB Regional Road took 83 e-buses into operation
in 2025. The transport services are provided in the Speyer area, in the Upper Middle Rhine Valley and in the municipalities of Füssen, Dormagen, Hardt-
Ost and Böblingen, among others. The range of on-
demand vehicles was also expanded with 16 small electric vehicles in the Baden-Württemberg and East regions.
  • Alternative fuels: In the Bavaria region, DB Regional Road has been operating an additional 17 buses using the more climate-friendly biofuel HVO since the end of 2025.
